Urban Climate Disaster Risk Reduction: ELLA Study Tour in Brazil

Managing and reducing urban climate disaster risk is an increasing concern to city authorities and urban dwellers alike. A study tour involving experts from Africa and Asia showed that much can be learned from the coordinated efforts of actors in Rio de Janeiro.

As part of the ELLA Learning Alliance on Climate Resilient Cities, 12 experts on Urban Climate Resilience and Disaster Risk Management were invited to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to take part in the ELLA study tour in May 2013. During this study tour the participants visited the cities of Xerém, Teresópolis and Rio de Janeiro. State and city level representatives of the Civil Defence accompanied the tour members and showed many of the strategies in place to reduce urban disaster risk.
